<br />
For many of you with family, especially children, on the spectrum you know the struggles they encounter with processing information rapidly. We are always looking forward to the "how in the world will they..." moments. Hearing from our families, the struggle with driving is a complex one: from teens who DO want to learn to teens who DON'T want to even try!<br />
<br />
I am always proud when one of our campers successfully receive their driver's license and never shocked when some express complete angst at the thought of driving. Maybe a self driving car is the answer for those who dread the thought. <br />
<br />
In the United States, cars are not just an outward sign of procuring expensive symbols demonstrating our ability to own even more stuff but also a key to independence! Many Americans live some distance from places of employment and recreation thus forcing reliance on transportation, both public and private. Yet, many cities and towns provide little availability in terms of public transport. Public transportation is much needed and desired but even when available, flexibility in routes and timing make use challenging especially for those who struggle to read time tables and maps.<br />
<br />
Moving our wonderful children on the spectrum toward independence is a hot topic as the population of those on the spectrum grows older. Preparing them for the work force often feels like tugging on the end of a piece of string woven tightly into the fabric of life. With each tug we uncover yet another area that must be addressed, another problem solved, another resource scouted but what IF...<br />
<br />
What if we knew transportation was made easier through self-driving cars, Uber, Lyft, and other ride sharing resources. What if we knew that they could safely get to their new job, a doctor's appointment, the store, etc...Will this provide them with one more resource to aid in their independence. Who knows?<br />
<br />
I for one am hopeful that this new and innovative technology will allow just one more of the teens we work with the opportunity to be independent without having to live within a large city where they may struggle with the sensory overload of that environment. They may live closer to family and friends who form their network of support. <br />
<br />
I am hopeful. I am watching...Talisman Summer Camphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15933508332004558208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055367453073243679.post-30846366424554650872015-03-07T06:55:00.000-08:002015-03-07T06:55:42.264-08:00Aspergers...what's in a nameWelcome to the frozen south. It has been awhile so let us just polar plunge into the deep end.<br />
<br />
When I speak to parents, siblings, clinicians, and professionals everyday about who our campers are, I have found myself (lately) using every term ever used to diagnose these amazing individuals- high functioning Autism, Autism Level 1, neuroatypicals, quirkys, neurodevelopmental disorders, the now defunct PDD, and my personal favorite:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">"The diagnosis formerly known as Aspergers" </span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yes, I air quote it every time-even when I am with you on the phone. I am a contemplator so hang in there (my family and friends are now rolling their eyes).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If I am struggling to provide a clear name, the parents are struggling for a concise way to describe why their child struggles, the clinicians are stumbling over their DSM codes and subjective level system, then HOW ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE DIAGNOSIS DOING??!!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We use terms (or labels) to encapsulate our experiences of something. I see them as a lexicon used by a busy and overwhelmed population trying to balance their shoulds, woulds, and coulds. People who have only a moment to investigate and plan for the next step while in the other room is a child, teen, or young adult who must be prompted and coaxed to brush their teeth, get off the computer, shower, change their clothes, eat something other than carbohydrates, or have their anxiety soothed...a means of helping others understand the complex nature of who that young person really is...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You see, working with more Aspergers/ high functioning Autism/PDD/neuro-atypicals/neurodevelopmental/quirky individuals than I can even count, I will always go back to their experience. If you the professional don't know quite how to refer to this very confusing way that their brain experiences the world, then how are they to begin to understand it. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I <i>will always</i> take my cue from the campers and families-because they are living the experience so they have the right to use whatever word/term they want and I <b>WILL</b> support them: </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you call me and use the term <b>Aspergers</b>, I will be right there with you for I am knowledgeable with what that term implies-every nuance of behavior, struggle, and delight- I get that. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you use the term<b> high functioning Autism</b>, I have your back- we will drill down to who your child is and how that affects their day to day life. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you throw out the acronym <b>PDD (pervasive developmental delay)</b> we will start with an air hug and deep sigh for that catch-all phrase that denotes we are on the playing field but still contemplating the sport. Then we will see if your camper can find companionship among peers at Talisman.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you refer to <b>Autism Level 1</b>, we will let the ink dry on your recent testing as we walk through how well these camp people will get your child and your parenting struggles.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you sling <b>neuroatypical</b> my way, you will hear my grin, we will drop names, and meet at the next rally to educate the world. We will safely ensconce your child among peers who are equally vocal about their needs and encourage them to connect with similars.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you begin with your understanding of <b>Neurodevelopmental Delays</b>, we will share our favorite recent research outcomes, pour over MRIs and fMRIs, and see if that camper can find a friend.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you use <b>quirky</b> we will share our favorite puns and characters, identify their strengths and supports, and get ready for the wild ride they will take us on.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Regardless of the term you use (or those around you use) we will take the time to know who your child is and what they experience. We will spend the summer with them chatting knowledgeably about Minecraft, Rooster Teeth, Legos, WWII weaponry, Bronies, coding, tree frogs, storm scenarios, trains, dinosaurs, movies, YouTube, cats, wolves, power-stroke diesels, Star Wars, biologic warfare, uncommon diseases, bugs, apps, etc... For this matters more to us than those terms/words/labels.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You see we love these kiddos- for every struggle, challenge, heart break they face in their lives AND for their ability to see amazing perspectives, think outside every box, funny, punny, observant thing they see, say and do! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Send them our way with whatever label they are given- we will find the person underneath, give them their voice, find them a friend who "gets" them, and give them (and you) hope for a wonderful outcome!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<br />
Hello- I work with an amazing summer camp in the mountains of western North Carolina. While we appreciate that you have produced a product that allows children of all ages to consume the vital minerals and nutrients they need to stay strong and healthy, we do have a wee bone to pick with you.<br />
<br />
We would like to offer you a challenge: Please take a 7 day supply of your product, place it in a small, light weight, and pack-able container and place it outside in the beautiful sunshine and fresh air for several hours. You may choose to place it in a small backpack-similar to what you would take on a day hike, to shield it from the glorious sun. Go ahead, we will wait...<br />

<br />
Now, take said gummy vitamins and attempt to isolate one from the other, let's say a red one. Oh and you can use sterile gloves, our staff do, so go ahead. You did it? Great, now find a willing young volunteer, preferably one who has very rigid ideas about what their gummies/gummys should look like and how the texture SHOULD feel, and encourage to them to take one. Hmmm, went well? No? Welcome to our world.<br />
<br />
You see, we have the very wonderful and difficult task of getting our campers out into the fresh air and sunshine for most of the day as well as overnight adventures. No computers, no television, no video games; just them and nature communing while they try new things and make new friends. Yes, it is a great job. <br />
<br />
Yet, once a day, regardless of how we store them, we are met with the gummy challenge. The gooey, sticky, messy disaster that is vitamin and supplement for so many of our campers (and some of our staff) is the bane of our existence. It is a drag really because of their increased level of physical activity, they need their gummy supplements now more than ever but alas...oh and by the way, insects and bees LOVE the smell of your product, just ask the staff who carries them! <br />
<br />
So from the camps of the world, we thank you. We will continue to store as directed, isolate each individual gummy in its own cozy little ziplock, carry gloves and extra water for clean up, and maybe one day figure out how to get little itty bitty ice coolers so we can pack them on our overnight adventures...<br />

This means I get to understand the many views of ADHD and ASD from the families who lives are impacted by these diagnoses. One of the questions I get a lot is "why does Talisman work with ADHD and ASD?"<br />
<br />
When people used to talk about developmental delays they typically were not referring to individuals who have ADHD but the newest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM 5) is changing all of that. Clinicians have long recognized that significant ADHD can delay growth in several developmental areas that include social skills, learning, communication, emotional regulation and more. The impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity directly impact skill development and progress in these areas. Initially it may not appear to be significant but we know that over time the effect is cumulative, increasing the delay, or essentially making the delay more obvious as their same age peers charge ahead in developmental progress. This leaves our campers interacting with fewer and fewer peers who have similar skill sets. This means there are less opportunities for our campers to refine and grow their own skills, or as I like to say "to help them smooth the rough edges of their social/communication skills."<br />
<br />
Talisman has, since its inception in 1980, always worked well for campers who struggled to communicate, interact, attend, work through conflicts, self direct, and self regulate. This was long before they had a name and a true understanding about either of these diagnoses. Using a strong routine, structured communication format, and intentional processing style; we are able to support campers who struggle in these areas. Many years later, with improved research creating better understanding of the cause and consequences of ADHD and ASD, we had a name for the profile of campers who thrived in our environment. <br />
<br />
Talisman's legacy has been and is to provide an opportunity for these campers to have a traditional camp experience. When you think of camp what typically comes to mind are the activities and environment: swimming, arts&crafts, hiking, camping, campfires, s'mores, and the camaraderie of peers. This seemed out of reach for the campers we serve IF they went to a typical camp. The high numbers of peers all simultaneously socializing at a rapid fire pace is overwhelming. The high variety of choices in activities that lead to a multitude of transitions occurring on a strict timeline. The long days paced to cram as much into them as possible. The ability to problem solve and navigate the varied structure requires high levels of self regulation or at least the ability to ask for and receive the support from the camp staff. Oh, and the highly stimulating buzz of sounds, sights, and smells of camp. All this and more can turn a fun experience at camp into one long stressful and overwhelming experience for the campers we serve.<br />
<br />
Talisman provides a traditional high adventure camp for our campers while supporting and structuring areas that can create anxiety and issues for them. Simultaneously, we give them many opportunities to work on improving skills in these areas and helping them compensate in others. In other words, we pull together a group of peers WITH similar skill sets and support them in maturing those skill sets into more developmentally appropriate ones. We have the best jobs in the world as we get to help our campers find out how amazing and capable they are!!!!<br />
<br />
Talisman's Parent Seminar occurs the day before you pick up your camper from Talisman. It is an all day event that addresses the why, what and how of Talisman. Topics range from ADHD, tips-tricks-and-techniques, ASD, social and emotional developmental approaches, and more. The best part is that it is free for our families. Did I mention that for once you get to do what your camper has done? You get to be in a room of people who know and understand your experience as a family with ADHD and/or ASD camper. That alone can be amazingly therapeutic.<br />
<br />
Parent Seminars: All sessions are from 9-4 (drop-ins are welcome)<br />
*Session 1 June 25th<br />
*Session 2 July 16th<br />
*Session 3 August 6th<br />

<br />
I am lucky enough to live, work, and play in one of the most amazing areas in the south. It has it all: scenery, outdoor sports and activities, 4 seasons (yes including snow), dining, culture, and some of the most amazing (and often strangest) people you will ever meet. Asheville wins many awards, polls, and acknowledgments from all over for many of these reasons. Many people visit or move here every year but only the lucky get to stay. So I am going to break an unwritten local's rule so you can get the most out of your time here-I am going to share some of the BEST secrets ever about my town. <br />
<br />
Shhhhh-tell no one else though...<br />
<br />
Let's keep this between you and me :)<br />

So you might get to spend a few days in beautiful Asheville, NC after dropping your camper off at Talisman. I have lived most of my life in this area: love to eat, shop, hike, play, and may enjoy an adult beverage or two- so below are my personal recommendations for sampling everything Asheville-the "live like a local" hot spots.<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Do me a favor</b>- if they ask how you found them, tell them Talisman Programs sent you! We are trying to get our families discounts for visiting a variety of places and they need to know that we are out there guiding you to them for them to work with us.</div>

<b>Where to stay</b>:</div>
This is such a personal choice for many. Our area has tons of great (and varied) accommodations. If you plan to do some downtown stuff and some nature stuff, go for a central location outside the city to save on money. Think Hendersonville Road or somewhere just south of Asheville. If you are localized to Asheville then downtown can be great but noisy. It has a vibrant night life- you have been warned :)<br /></div>
Downtown walking hotels include the Renaissance, Hotel Indigo (kinda fancy for right on the by-pass), the ultra modern Aloft, and uber-fancy Haywood Park. But don't shy away from the drive-able areas as parking in the garages is the best bet for cheap and easy parking downtown. Try the Crown Plaza Resort or any hotel near the Biltmore. Of course there is always the Grove Park Inn and Biltmore. (Do NOT stay at the Downtown Inn and Suites unless you really want to relive your early college days and like to party until 4 am.)<br /></div>
<div>
Oh and the Bed & Breakfasts- pick one, any one, they are all (mostly) amazing!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Or go old school and peaceful with the Highland Lake Inn & Resort in Flat Rock, I love the trails around the property. http://hlinn.com/</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Don't forget the Grove Park Inn, and Biltmore.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Bringing a furry, 4 legged friend- try Barkwells (I know- but it is great) http://barkwells.com/</div>

Seriously- if I find out you ate at any RESTAURANT CHAINS while you were here I will be very sad and not invite you back. Asheville is a very well known food destination with a very long and strong culinary history. More world chefs, food network shows, and food competitions happen here in one year than in all of the rest of NC. We also having a thriving food truck industry- think gourmet food trucks.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I recommend reservations always but realize some places do not take reservations. Call to check and don't worry-the people watching is spectacular! (oh and just Google Blind Pig of Asheville).<br /></div>

Talisman Summer Camphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15933508332004558208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055367453073243679.post-865989565284758802014-05-01T07:24:00.000-07:002014-05-01T07:24:49.332-07:00Getting perspective...<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello again from a beautiful May morning at camp!</div>
<br />
This week I thought I would share some amazing videos from the Autism Speaks website.<br />
<br />
http://www.autismspeaks.org/news/news-item/5-video-simulations-help-you-experience-autism-highlighted-mashable<br />
<br />
We are part of many discussions with families and professionals that often come around to "teaching" our campers empathy, insight, and perspective. You know- bringing them around to our/everyone else's point of view-but what about reversing that. Why not step in their shoes for a change. With the amazing advance in technology- we are beginning to hear from individuals on the spectrum. These individuals, some verbal but many non-verbal, are putting together books, art, and videos that take us inside their head and let us experience their perspective. <br />
<br />
I personally love that for a brief moment I get to viscerally experience "their world." I gain from that moment and it reminds me why I do this work. I consume so many books, videos, shows, movies, and conversations that open this perspective up for me. It helps me to start looking for how to capitalize on each individual's abilities and also finding unique ways to help each individual compensate for their difficulties. After all, we all have to do this on some level for ourselves-at least I know I do...<br />
<br />
Watch the videos, read the books, rent the movies, go to see ASD individuals speak-I provide a wonderful list of all these at our parent seminars. I hope to see you there!<br />
<br />
***Talisman works with many groups and organizations to support and advocate for our campers. We support the Autism Society and Autism Speaks through various activities and events. Many have concerns around different branches of these organizations but we understand that no organization is going to meet your every need nor your every philosophy. <br />
<br />
For those new to these two groups I use a simplified explanation:<br />
<br />
Autism Society is a support and resource group for parents and by parents of children on the spectrum. That means that as a professional who works with children diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, and/or LDs, I am more than welcome to become a part of that support but their main function is not typically geared toward me-it is for the family who has a member on the spectrum. We certainly benefit from the training and information provided though.<br />
<br />
Autism Speaks is an advocacy group that aims to fund research in the field of Autism. It bands together families, professionals, and political powers to generate funding and push for a wider scope of support, research, and advocacy for ASD. They have done and are doing many great things, like getting 36 states to recognize that ABA intervention is the gold standard at all levels of ASD and should be funded by insurance companies! <br />
<br />
Next week- why ADD/ADHD and ASD at Talisman....<br />
<br />
P.S.- When decorating plastic trunks I was taught the power and fortitude of vinyl!!! That stuff sticks to EVERYTHING-apparently that includes one of my rugs :( At your local craft store you can get lots of products that tenaciously adhere to trunks of all materials. Not sure about the battering the trunks will take with UPS, USPS, and airlines but I am enjoying painting and creating sticker masterpieces on the inside and outside of my new "conference material" trunk!!<br />
<br />
Send me photos of YOUR decorated trunk and I will figure out how to post it here!!!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />Talisman Summer Camphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15933508332004558208noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055367453073243679.post-80486690812151278862014-04-23T12:55:00.000-07:002014-04-23T12:55:11.284-07:00Ms. Robiyn takes over the Talisman Summer Camp Blog!When I was elected (voted, persuaded, forced-whatever) to take over the blog, my first response was a resounding sigh felt across the office. I struggle to write Thank you cards to friends and family, why did they think I could do this???<br />
<br />
Then it hit me, I have a place to put out all the information I consume on various topics (I know-camp related) but also a way to put out information that more than one staff, family, or camper has asked about.<br />
<br />
So here it goes-<br />
<br />
My first blog is for the families who are asking for information on <b>camp trunks</b>. Exciting right?!?<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.rockbrookcamp.com/files/2012/06/camp-trunks-arriving.jpg" /><br />
<br />
So I recommend a Rubbermaid type trunk. It must fit everything that is coming to camp this summer (well-except the camper), must have a lid, must take a beating, and must be clearly labeled with the camper's name.<br />
<br />
If it is lockable-be prepared for the key/combo to get lost and for our facility guy to use brute force strength to open it :)<br />
<br />
Oh, and just to mess with Mr. Doug's head (our fearless camp director),<b> it MUST be decorated!!</b> Let us see if he notices-going for 100% decorated trunks.<br />
<br />
<b>How are you going to get it to camp??!!</b><br />
I recommend UPS- they will pick it up and drop it off-no need to drag it to a car or even fly it. You can also get two labels and we will have them ship it the afternoon of your camper's closing day.<br />
<br />
See you next blog...is anyone reading this? Hello?!?<br />
<br />

<br />Talisman Summer Camphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15933508332004558208noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055367453073243679.post-8443924685557463622013-02-05T09:10:00.002-08:002013-02-05T09:10:46.894-08:00My New Hero: Steve Baskin speaks to the importance of summer camp As a forever advocate of the power of summer camp, I couldn't help but beam during Steve Baskin's entire closing Keynote speech at a great conference called Campminder Camp in Bouler, CO last friday. His speech was similar to the link below, but was to an entire room of some of the best minds in summer camp. I think we needed to hear it as much as any parent.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/4rI3olRHxP4?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
This conference I attended was put together by a company called Campminder who has so many innovative ideas, it's hard to know where to start. They have revolutionized the administrative side of summer camp and helped to bring the camping business into the 21st century while keeping the camp experience as traditional and fun as ever. We thank them for our online registration, photo gallery, and online forms portal to name a few. Balancing technology and summer camp is tricky, but they help us to make it work. <br />
<br />
Over the course of this conference I attended marketing sessions covering everything to catalogs and print material to twitter and facebook. These sessions all seemed to have one underlying theme that it was tough to get away from: <i><b>it's hard to sell the experience of summer camp</b></i>. It's like selling a family tradition to strangers, those who haven't lived it will have a hard time understanding why we do what we do. <br />
For those parents or professionals who went to camp as kids: they played color wars, made friendship braceletes, and couldn't wait for campfire. Helping them understand camp is easy, they've been there and understand the summer camp magic. For those folks who didn't attend summer camp, it's a little more difficult. Camp is full of traditions, silly games, and an entire culture that's near impossible to portray no matter how many pictures we take, videos we make, or hours we spend trying to explain it over the phone. It became very clear what we needed to do to have any chance of reaching out to these families.<br />
<br />
We need to take a different angle to get these families on board.<br />
<br />
Over the course of the past few years summer camps have started to receive more notice in the academic world. Empirical studies have been conducted to demonstrate the power summer camp has on everything from independence, to social skills (<a href="http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10566-010-9110-x?LI=true" target="_blank">particularly those kids with ASD</a>), to overall success in college and beyond. As high schools, colleges, and the job market becomes more competitive than ever before parents are doing everything they can to help their child get ahead, why not try camp?<br />
<br />
For the families who aren't sure what they are doing with this summer I challenge you to consider camp this year. It may be scary but give it a shot, I'll save you a seat at campfire.<br />

</section></aside><div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) had significant variation in cortical volume, thickness, and surface area compared with an age-matched control group, MRI brain scans showed.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The differences in people with ASD consisted primarily of increased cortical thickness in frontal-lobe regions (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em><0.003 versus control group) and reduced surface area in the orbitofrontal cortex and posterior cingulum (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em><0.05), wrote Christine Ecker, PhD, of King's College London, and colleagues in<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Archives of General Psychiatry</em> online.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Differences in surface area accounted for a majority of the variation in cortical volume, but in almost a third of cases, neither cortical thickness nor surface area could account for the variation in volume.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A comparison of imaging results and scores on a standardized autism test showed some correlation between cortical volume and symptom severity.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Differences in cortical volume observed in individuals with ASD may be underpinned by cortical thickness and surface area, which exhibited statistically independent sources of variability," the authors said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"These two factors are likely to be the result of distinct developmental pathways that are modulated by different neurobiological mechanisms. Both cortical thickness and surface area would thus benefit from being explored in isolation to elucidate the etiology and neurobiology of ASD," they added.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Another study in the same issue of the journal showed that individuals with ASD have excessive microglial activation in multiple brain regions, as revealed by PET imaging.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Autopsy and neuroimaging studies have demonstrated multiple differences in brain anatomy of individuals with ASD compared with the general population.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Most prior studies employed volumetric analyses. Because of the specific anatomical characteristics of cortical volume, determining the driving factors underlying the differences might lead to better understanding of ASD's biologic basis.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Ecker and colleagues studied 84 young (mean age 26) right-handed men and an age-matched control group of 84 men.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Participants in the ASD were assessed by means of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) to confirm the diagnosis of childhood autism, and current symptoms were determined by the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule. Their intellectual capacity was evaluated by a standard IQ test, which showed that all members of the ASD group were high functioning.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All participants underwent quantitative MRI studies, which included a standardized data-acquisition protocol.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The ASD and control groups did not differ with respect to full-scale or verbal IQ, but the ASD group demonstrated significantly poorer performance IQ (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em>=0.001). The groups also did not differ in total brain volume or mean cortical thickness.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
After performing a correlational analysis of multiple comparisons across the brain, the authors found that the ASD group had significantly greater cortical thickness in the left lateral prefrontal cortex (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em><0.003), including peaks in the ventrolateral and rostrolateral prefrontal cortex.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The individuals with ASD also had significantly decreased cortical thickness in the right anterior temporal lobe (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em><0.04) and significantly decreased cortical volume in a region of the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em><0.005). The ASD and control groups did not differ significantly in terms of overall surface area.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Surface area did differ between the groups in certain regions of the brain. ASD was associated with decreased surface area in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and bilateral orbitofrontal cortex; left anterior temporal gyrus and anterior cingulate; and supplementary and presupplementary motor cortices. Surface area was decreased in the temporoparietal junction.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The authors found that about two-thirds of the between-group differences in cortical volume could be attributed to overlap with cortical thickness (8%), surface area (56%), or both (5%).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the ASD group, the authors found statistically significant correlations between the cortical thickness in the left dorsolateral front cluster and higher scores on the ADI-R communication and repetitive domains (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em>=0.02, <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em>=0.009) and total ADI-R scores (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em>=0.01).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Significantly reduced cortical volume in the orbitofrontal cortex was associated with increased symptom severity on the ADI-R social domain (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em>=0.03 and <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em>=0.04 for left and right hemispheres).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Thus, individuals with more severe social autistic symptoms at ages 4 to 5 years displayed significantly smaller cortical volume of the orbitofrontal lobes," the authors wrote, adding that their results should be considered exploratory and require future replication.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the second study, Japanese investigators reported significantly increased tracer uptake on PET imaging in multiple regions of the brain in young men with ASD. The study involved 20 patients with ASD (age 18 to 31; mean IQ 95.9) and 20 age- and IQ-matched healthy men without ASD.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The most prominent increase in tracer uptake was evident in the cerebellum. Other areas with increased uptake were the midbrain, pons, fusiform gyri, and anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortices (<em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">P</em><0.05 for all values).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The pattern of regional binding potential (tracer uptake) did not differ between the cases and control group, only the magnitude, which was greater in the ASD group than the control group in all regions assessed.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Our results indicate excessive microglial activation in multiple brain regions in young adult subjects with ASD," wrote Norio Mori, MD, PhD, of Hamamatsu University in Hamamatsu City, and colleagues.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"The similar distribution pattern of regional microglial activity in the ASD and control groups may indicate augmented but not altered microglial activation in the brain in the subjects with ASD," they said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The study had some limitations. It was performed on a population basis and the participants were high-functioning ASD patients; the study did not include ASD subtypes in which immunologic abnormality may have been more prominent. Also, the radiotracer used has a significant nonspecific binding.</div>
<div style="background-color: #dbe9f2; border: 1px solid rgb(141, 171, 188); color: #333333; float: left; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 5px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The study by Ecker and colleagues was supported by the Medical Research Council. Ecker reported no conflicts of interest. Co-author Edward Bullmore, MD, PhD, is a shareholder and part-time employee of GlaxoSmithKline.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The study by Mori and colleagues was supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, and by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. The authors had no conflicts of interest.</div>

One of the coolest parts of working at a place like Talisman is that we are a pretty unique program with a great blend of staff with different backgrounds. Just in our (3) year-round staff we have bachelors degrees in psychology, outdoor eduction and recreation management, and religion with a masters in child and youth care administration. We come from different walks of life and all bring in our own experiences into camp. We always make an effort to keep up with topics relevant to camp, from resources like the American Camping Association (ACA), to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM), and many avenues in between. We are a fun summer camp, but we also like to serve as support and resource to families, and improve our programming with new research and ideas. <br />

Our most recent goal to keep current and well rounded is by starting our own in-office book reports. Each month (in the off-season) we have made a goal to read one book or journal article that is relevant to camp in one way or another and present it to the rest of the office. We're dusting off our library cards and excited to sink our teeth into our first assignment. Personally I'm going back to my psychology roots and reading a book outlining behavior modification and it's practical uses. <a href="http://www.valorebooks.com/textbooks/behavior-modification-what-it-is-and-how-to-do-it/9780130807427" target="_blank">Here's a link</a> to the book if anyone else wants to read it too. I was initially drawn to this topic for a few reasons: </div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Behavior Modification is the basis of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), pioneered by B.F. Skinner himself and the most widely used autism therapy today. </li>
<li>Based on the review I used this book combines the theories and concepts of Behavior Modification and everyday examples.</li>
<li>I want to be the first one in the office to learn it so I can modify behavior around the office without anyone knowing :)</li>
</ul>
<div>
Doug and Linda are still taking a look at what's out there before they decide on a book. I'm excited to see what they come up with! Get excited to see the fruits of our labour next month. </div>
</div>

<strong>By Alison O'Brien</strong><br /><em><strong>Rock Center</strong></em></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
It happens in a lot of new relationships. Every day, you learn something new about each other. It happened with David and Kristen Finch.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“David was quirky,” Kristen said. “Always just very sweet and funny, [and] kind of nerdy, but in a cute nerdy way.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“Very sexy nerd,” David interjected and, smiling, Kristen agreed.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
The two met while attending high school in their small Illinois town and after years as friends, David and Kristen began dating. To Kristen, he was “super boyfriend” – a go with the flow guy who was the life of any social gathering.</div>
<div class="inlineCode photo_align_left" data-contentid="14095731" id="vine-inlineCode__14095731" style="clear: left; float: left; margin: 0px 30px 30px 0px; padding: 0px;">
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/likebox.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Frockcenternbc&width=292&colorscheme=light&show_faces=false&border_color=ffffff&stream=false&header=false&height=62" style="border-style: none; height: 62px; overflow: hidden; width: 292px;"></iframe></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“He was entertaining the whole room,” said Kristen, age 35. “And it got people laughing.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
But, when they married in 2003, the laughter stopped. Kristen was confused. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I thought, what happened?” she said. “You know, it was almost like night and day after we got married.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
Once they were living together, David’s actions, once quirky to Kristen now seemed strange. They began to put a strain on their marriage. David, then in his twenties, was obsessed with daily rituals. He would take an hour to make his breakfast. He’d meticulously wash and cut grapes, make his oatmeal and tea. When it came to his eggs, he would line up the carton making it parallel to the countertop and carefully scramble his eggs to make sure the consistency was the same from one day to the next.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
David, who was working as an engineer, had an outfit for each season. In the winter, he’d wear a sweatshirt with Eastern printed on it and track pants. In the summer, he’d wear a t-shirt and shorts that became so worn, they developed holes. Every day, he had to wear the same clothes because if he didn’t, David said he “would silently freak out.”</div>
<div class="inlinePhoto photo_landscape photo_align_right " data-contentid="14095757" id="vine-inlinePhoto__14095757" style="clear: right; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 20px; padding: 0px; width: 380px;">

David Finch staring at rooftops, one of the rituals that helps calm him.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“Tension would mount and I couldn't say anything. Pretty soon I'd start snapping at people,” he explained in an interview with Kate Snow airing Thursday, Sept. 27 at 10pm/9c on NBC's Rock Center with Brian Williams.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
The rituals would continue until bedtime. Every night, David would stare out the window at his neighbors’ rooftops. He found the symmetry calming. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I have a physiological response,” he said. “My shoulders relax. My head calms down and it's kind of nice.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
But it wasn’t so nice for Kristen. While she took care of the house and their two children, daughter Emily and son Parker, David was fixated on himself. When things didn’t go exactly as planned, he’d obsess endlessly. It happened one Thanksgiving when there was garlic in the mashed potatoes. According to David, garlic didn’t belong in the mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving dinner.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I would sit there and I would complain about it,” David recounted. “And I'd bring it up constantly to Kristen. And then she would get on my case, because she would be very confused. She thinks I look like a baby and I think this is completely unfair, but I don't know how else to react. And so that would set me off.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
In recalling the incident, Kristen said, “I’m thinking how am I going to do this the rest of my life?”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
Things were spiraling out of control until March 13, 2008. Kristen, a speech therapist who works with autistic children, was doing research for a client when she came across an online quiz. It was a test of Asperger’s Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder characterized by repetitive tendencies, obsessive interest in several narrow subjects, difficulty reading the emotions of others and social difficulties. When she started reading the questions, Kristen says, she realized her husband had Asperger’s. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“All of a sudden, the light bulb went off,” she said.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
<strong>David Finch on Asperger's Diagnosis at 31: It was a 'moment of self-recognition'</strong></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
She had David take the quiz, but didn’t tell him why or what it was about. The questions ranged from “Do you find it vitally important to remain undisturbed when you’re focusing on your special interests?” to “Do you feel tortured by certain clothes?” The longer the quiz went on, the more personally revealing the questions – and his answers – were. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
At the end, the computer tallied his score - 155 out of 200 possible points – and determined it is likely he had Asperger’s. He cried. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I cried because it was this moment of self-recognition I had never had before,” he said.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
A doctor confirmed his diagnosis and, at age 31, David finally had a reason for his behaviors, and an idea of what may be causing his marriage to suffer. In the same way he obsessed over his neighbor’s rooftops, he was now obsessed with fixing himself and his marriage to Kristen. He decided on his own that he needed to modify his behavior.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I wanted to change,” he said. “I wanted to learn how to manage these behaviors. To give myself a better life, to get our marriage back on track and to earn back Kristen's friendship; to be a better dad and to have a more fulfilling life.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
But David didn’t keep that news to himself. Instead, he decided to go public with his story, writing a memoir which became a New York Times best-seller called “The Journal of Best Practices.” </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
It’s not a self-help book, but a book about his journey of self-discovery and his efforts to save his marriage to Kristen. It grew from notes he wrote reminding himself to break out of his head and be more responsive to those around him, be a present husband and father, and pay attention to the needs of other people. He even wrote reminders about simple needs such as not to change the radio station when Kristen is singing along, and as important as taking initiative and being a dad.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I’ve made being a better husband, the husband that I want to be, my special interest,” the 35-year-old David said. “And it’s paying off.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
He’s seeing results in many areas of his life. One note, “parties are supposed to be fun,” reminds David to be good, worthy company at a party. While that may seem like a no-brainer to most, it is a difficult task for David as people with Asperger’s often have a difficult time in social situations. Before his diagnosis, the way David would cope in a group was to mimic the behavior of people who he thought did a great job of fitting in. His favorite role was “the comedian.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“In order to socialize, I found it was easiest just to get people laughing,” David Finch said. “I would do these ridiculous stunts and jokes, and people loved this.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
But getting people laughing, he found, was exhausting and not entirely fulfilling. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I would keep that up at like manic, frenetic pace for like an hour, and then I would leave the party,” he said.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
So David began studying not just the great humorists, but great communicators. One of his favorite people to study is radio shock jock, Howard Stern.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“Howard’s really an amazingly effective communicator,” he said. “What I’m taking away is his system for engaging his listener.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
By adopting his pacing and voice modulation, and taking cues from his body language, David says he has become better company. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“What I can do is I can give them a couple of minutes of that [humor], and then I can slow it down,” David Finch said. “I can get rid of the shtick and I can really engage in a nice conversation.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
David calls this behavior modification, unlearning old behaviors and learning new ones. He is adamant that he is not curing Asperger’s, nor does he believe one should. He simply says that he wanted to change and has made it a priority. Now, four years after his diagnosis, David says he’s still a work in progress, and Kristen says they met in the middle to put their marriage back on track. </div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">
“I guess that was why when we got the diagnosis that I knew that we were going to be ok, because I knew we were both willing to change to make it work,” she said.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; position: static; z-index: 20;">

School
is officially in session for everyone, and for many it's just
hitting that three week mark; it's the time when the notebooks aren't quite
looking as new, pens and pencils are missing, and if we don't keep up with it
the lunchbox may start to smell a little funky. </div>

typically around this time of the semester that the first little hiccup
emerges. It means that the study guide for the first exam is starting to be
reviewed, a bigger paper is going to get assigned, and the quizzes start to
matter. It's also the time when sports and clubs are in full swing so the
family ends up going a hundred different ways between 3:00 and bedtime.
How in the world do you stay sane?<i> </i>Here are a couple tricks that may help ease the whirlwind that is the fall. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>The week starts on Sunday: </b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Saturday
is football games, play dates, chess club, etc. Turn Sunday (or at least
part of Sunday) into planning day; it simplifies your week in so many ways. <o:p></o:p></div>
<ul type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal">Plan the meals for the <i>whole
week, </i> and then shop for the whole week. This can
dramatically reduce (not necessarily eliminate) those impromptu
trips to the grocery store. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Clean out backpacks, and review
schedules/planners. Doing this weekly will reduces the chances of <i>I
lost my homework... </i> there are only so many places it could
be. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Tidy up the house: starting Monday
with a clean house just makes you feel good, and again, less chances of
lost items throughout the week <o:p></o:p></li>

<b>Clipboards: </b><o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
These are
some of my favorite tools: they are portable, can be personalized, and easy to
keep track of. Here are the basic ideas behind them:</div>
<h2>
</h2>
<ul type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal">Assign each kiddo a clipboard and if you feel crafty you can (or they can) decorate the back to give it a little more flare.</li>
<li class="MsoNormal">At the end of each day when the
kids come home they have to take their assignments, notes from the
teacher, permission slips etc. out of their backpack and clip it onto their clipboard </li>
<li class="MsoNormal">When it's homework time they can
simply take it off the wall and complete their homework anywhere. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">For older kids, clip
the syllabus from each class here to remember important dates,
and other important information specific to the class. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Once they are done clip it back up
and put it back on the wall. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Easier still: use a string to
attach a pencil to the clipboard so
they are never without a writing utensil. <o:p></o:p></li>
</ul>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Family Calendar: </b><o:p></o:p></div>

<li class="MsoNormal">This sounds straight-forward, but
the difference having an up-to-date family calendar in a place that
everyone can see can help ease the anxiety of when mom will be
home, who has soccer practice, or remembering when PTO is. <o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Empower kids to write their big

it as how can we help you keep up with school, activities, etc so you will have
more time for fun? Spend one of those planning Sundays (or any day

Everyone has different learning styles, that doesn't mean that one student is smarter than another, but it can mean that some students may struggle in a typical classroom. Just because our kids may have different ways to learn doesn't mean that it has to be a school year full of academic frustration in the classroom and at home.<br />
The beauty of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is that when done right we can enhance the learning in the classroom and put all professionals (teachers, Aids, etc.) on board. Just a few simple tweaks to a day, from help with handwriting to a visual aid for a multi-task project can make a world of difference in a child’s academic year and be reflected in their grades.<br />
Robiyn Mims, our wonderful Director of Family Services at Talisman Academy went into great detail regarding IEP’s and more at our parent seminars. She covered everything from who to make sure you have at an IEP meeting to what the timeline should be. Here are some of the basics she believes every parent should know:<br />
<b><br /></b>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE3mT3_CITQlwYxR6cNs3aSrogcTRSu9kflzGBU5u_Urfc0vdZrtCSHUs9gMhi7-6vwb1GAYFK-9FXuOefvtitTXGiDeYjS7hK26yg1gwPfSYdwe1RYMd2kL3A0ImhVjifdgh8J12TZIY_/s1600/IEP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE3mT3_CITQlwYxR6cNs3aSrogcTRSu9kflzGBU5u_Urfc0vdZrtCSHUs9gMhi7-6vwb1GAYFK-9FXuOefvtitTXGiDeYjS7hK26yg1gwPfSYdwe1RYMd2kL3A0ImhVjifdgh8J12TZIY_/s1600/IEP.jpg" /></a></div>
<b>The difference between Accommodations and Modifications.</b> An IEP can be written for both, but the difference can result in merely a certificate of completion of something vs. a diploma. Accommodations are made for students with exceptional needs who follow a grade level curriculum. These do not change the instructional level or the content, merely present information in a different way to (you guessed it) accommodate a different style of learning.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Modifications change what the student is expected to learn.</b> This can be anything from instructional level to reducing the number of key skills that are expected to be mastered. This will alter the grade level curriculum and may not keep the student on track to graduate with a full diploma <br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Accommodations and Modifications don't end after high school. </b>You can take these tools apply them to college and the work place. When looking at colleges, technical schools, or jobs, factor this into the decision. Many colleges and universities are happy to accommodate the exceptional needs of students as long as those needs are communicated. Set this up at the beginning of the year, or at orientation with student academic services. Also encourage your student to speak directly with their professors, bosses etc. It's always easier to accommodate needs when they are stated upfront and everyone is on the same page. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMX8iEQuuDNAOZR5ygZRpeSJUMuPGOUUkMzapu0UiAOEy7DK3Ptehs1r_bLcDEvrSG50jFhfUg5u2DCL_793_jadomInu5aG5sJmZY7-namO92mWp72uqqXiW4PDY0bWgAyuhD09Spx7vb/s1600/iep2.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMX8iEQuuDNAOZR5ygZRpeSJUMuPGOUUkMzapu0UiAOEy7DK3Ptehs1r_bLcDEvrSG50jFhfUg5u2DCL_793_jadomInu5aG5sJmZY7-namO92mWp72uqqXiW4PDY0bWgAyuhD09Spx7vb/s320/iep2.gif" width="299" /></a></div>
<br />
Lastly, <b>get or become a parent advocate</b>. Is this your first time going through this long and confusing process? Why not have someone who has been in your shoes on your side? Parent advocates are a wonderful support system who can stand up for you, hold your hand, and empathize with you. If you've been around the IEP block a time or two, think about what you felt like diving into your child's first IEP. Why not be there for another parent who is overwhelmed, scared, or just needs someone to remind them that all this time spent testing, putting materials together, and advocating that it's all worth it in the end. <br />
<br />
Looking forward to a great academic year!<br />

Campus is clean, and quiet......very quiet.<br />
<br />
I wanted to take a little bit to talk through what was my 4th year at Talisman, but 16th summer at camp. Either I'm crazy, or there is something that happens at camp that keeps people coming back.<br />
<br />
The concept of camp has always enthralled me, I credit a lot of my success and abilities I have today to the experiences I have had at camp.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">In front of the lake of my childhood camp</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I was lucky enough to go to camp every summer and there I got the opportunity to meet new people who weren't from my hometown, didn't go to my school, and who had no idea who I was. I had to figure out not only how talk to them and form new friendships, but how to live with them, work in a group (even if I didn't like them), and how to say good-bye to them in just a few weeks. <br />
<br />
Aside from interpersonal skills I learned how to camp, kayak, canoe, rock climb, and more games than I can count. All of these things may seem trivial, but these are skills that were foreign to me, and by the end of a session or a summer I could say that I knew it, I felt as though I had mastered a new skill. That just felt good, I came home bragging about these new things like I had just conquered the world. Even trying something new, like archery, and <i>not</i> succeeding in making the arrow go more than 10 feet despite my best efforts taught me that I am not going to succeed at everything, but that I should still try because you really never know. Years later I did hit a hay bail (not even the target) and couldn't have been more proud. <br />
When I was a teenager I was recommended to the counselor in training program at my camp (most people know it as a CIT program). I got the practice of working in a first job, managing schedules, and doing things that I didn't want to do but had do (like washing dishes) with a fantastic support system you couldn't find in a job anywhere else.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6n0jXGbGYqARZrn6FC3KxOeHZK_ocNDY3MiBLUKR2nc1tZyi20jipW17UptBi_VE5bKWtVdwLb4tQsxkpwl09AWEQosRhVrDK5AxjqTI-nBibwh782RR-1boQbFD4TwClYGRzR3hbLwQ8/s1600/Tali.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6n0jXGbGYqARZrn6FC3KxOeHZK_ocNDY3MiBLUKR2nc1tZyi20jipW17UptBi_VE5bKWtVdwLb4tQsxkpwl09AWEQosRhVrDK5AxjqTI-nBibwh782RR-1boQbFD4TwClYGRzR3hbLwQ8/s320/Tali.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Who get's to do this at work??</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
What I'm trying to say is that camp isn't an isolated incident that they campers will forget once they come home. Yes, they may forget the names of their counselors, or what their cabin was called, but the experience itself can and will expand into more than a couple of weeks. I have seen it just as much in our campers this summer as I have seen it in myself. <br />
<br />
Here's to a great season at Talisman and all camps across the country, and to everyone else who helped make it possible. <br />
<br />
Can't wait to continue to live the magic next year. <br />

I've talked about how critical the media is for visual learners and how these kids learn in a completely different manner to their peers.</i></b><br /><b><i><br /></i></b><br /><i>Now however, we need to look at the negative aspects of this media obsession. I've already discussed the possibility of learned violent behaviours, irresponsibility (jackass) and bad language. In this post, I want to look at some of the less obvious types of negatives.</i><br /><br /><b>Inattention and Immediacy</b><br />In the last decade have become an immediate society. We expect our movies to start with action sequence immediately and without introduction. If the film is a slower one then often the action is the film's credit sequence itself; <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258000/combined" style="color: #d1b575; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Panic Room</a> for example. I've noticed that many kids and adults today simply don't have the patience to watch an older film and it's one of the main reasons that Hollywood thinks that it can get away with poor quality fast-paced remakes instead of original ideas.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg78nmVGjK9OacA0fTcHiNmVslz2EB6A5MXfaXIzLbbylgmNiQ26NugE9agp64uozcMLJpY5LUP83wxSI3aaZSySKEy4nZyh4dT-iEg5hDtFupRfsOfZUegeRzY9-aYMZyBwbw0er0PGZk/s1600/PanicRoomCredits.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="color: #d1b575; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration: none;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg78nmVGjK9OacA0fTcHiNmVslz2EB6A5MXfaXIzLbbylgmNiQ26NugE9agp64uozcMLJpY5LUP83wxSI3aaZSySKEy4nZyh4dT-iEg5hDtFupRfsOfZUegeRzY9-aYMZyBwbw0er0PGZk/s400/PanicRoomCredits.jpg" style="border: none; position: relative;" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><b><i>In <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258000/combined" style="color: #d1b575; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Panic Room</a>, most of the action happens in the credits.</i></b></span></div>
<br />This immediacy isn't just in our films, it's everywhere. Email is too slow nowadays and instant messaging (chatting) is preferred. Even worse, slow typists or people who can't be bothered thinking of words can simply click "like" or use abbreviations such as LOL as standard responses.<br /><br />Even our thirst for knowledge is affected by immediacy and anyone who has a question doesn't bother to think it through. Not when the answer can be found on our phones in seconds. In fact, Google's Gmail is taking the interesting step of integrating a research pane into their mail system for greater immediacy.<br /><br />Unfortunately the majority of life's little problems don't have immediate solutions and the youth of today simply lack the patience and determination to find solutions. I'm not just talking about math problems here, I'm talking about relationship issues - or even just taking some time out to "visit grandma" without having to take a nintendo DS along for distraction.<br /><br /><b>Overload</b><br />Then there's the problem of overload. Our brains are constantly working. It used to be the case that people could leave their workplace and have some "downtime" on public transport but now our ever-present phones, pads and computers provide a constant connection to the office, the internet, games, music, ebooks and other forms of mental stimulation.<br /><br />Even the smaller moments where our brains could grab a quick break, such as when we were in queues, are gone. Go to McDonalds or the post office and watch the queues. Everyone is playing with their mobiles. Sadly the same is true in restaurants, where people are surrounded by families but play with their mobiles instead.<br /><br />Our brains need rest - as do our fingers. Overload isn't just about the huge masses of information available to us. It's also about the lack of breaks.<br /><br />It's little wonder that we are seeing more mental illnesses and more people "snapping" than ever before. We're all under a huge amount of stress and we're unable to take breaks.<br /><br /><b>Online Behaviour</b><br />Online danger is not just about predators, bullies and stalkers. Arguably, most of our kids online behaviour can be cause for concern. As a father whose eight-year old booked a complete overseas wedding package for himself using only made-up credit card numbers, I can attest to the danger of the internet in the wrong hands.<br /><br />An <a href="http://www.netnanny.com/" style="color: #d1b575; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Internet nanny</a> might stop pornographic materials but it won't necessarily stop your child from installing malware or providing tracable details in an online form - particularly if there's the possibility of winning a toy in the process. It also won't stop your older children from finding and using your credit cards online.<br /><br />Don't forget that although you might use a secure firewall at home or put net nanny on your home PC, your child will increasingly be using other devices to connect to the internet. They may not have a data connection on their phone or ipad (or Nintendo DS) but if they're close to McDonalds or another place with free wi-fi, then the internet is only a few clicks away.<br /><br /><b>Health Issues</b><br />Any activity which puts you into an immobile position for long periods of time or which puts muscles through significant repetitive motion is unhealthy.<br /><br />Television, computers and handheld devices all fall into this category. One of the major issues with Asperger's syndrome is "low muscle tone" a condition in which the layering of musculature on the body doesn't provide effective support. This causes a person to lean or to slouch. Slouching puts strain on the back and can cause long term posture issues and back pain.<br /><br />Then there's the repetitive motion of keyboarding, mousing, gaming or touch-screening. All of these can cause overuse injuries and eventually RSI. Even worse, slouching can exacerbate these injuries.<br /><br />There's plenty more to consider, there's eyestrain, there's vitamin D deficiency which comes from lack of sunlight and there's the nutrition problems which come from long-term computer addiction. In short, there are a lot of health risks to consider.<br /><br /><b>Media-related Tantrums</b><br />I'm not a big believer in the idea that the consumption of violent media necessarily makes a person violent but ask me if computer games create violence and I'll agree whole-heartedly.<br /><br />It's not the violent games either, in fact, it's more often the cute innocent ones that are to blame. It's the froggers (showing my age) and the Mario's of the world who are to blame.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2rw3resrCf0Wthc4wBcbrQg1tHL_jVShO-kZFvRIh4JP5jJZviH5LrhfB-oW_VWtZ1_XgWwPOaqt-FvVSmQFFtYcbVSqR9z7I6mzsoHQ9djVsvUJKbcarvgjC55FrzIdjPlGs_H-cIlM/s1600/Frogger.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="color: #d1b575; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration: none;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2rw3resrCf0Wthc4wBcbrQg1tHL_jVShO-kZFvRIh4JP5jJZviH5LrhfB-oW_VWtZ1_XgWwPOaqt-FvVSmQFFtYcbVSqR9z7I6mzsoHQ9djVsvUJKbcarvgjC55FrzIdjPlGs_H-cIlM/s320/Frogger.jpg" style="border: none; position: relative;" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /><br />It's amazing how often I've seen kids - not just my own - throwing controllers, shouting at the TV and lashing out at their friends over a simple game of Lego Star Wars - in fact, I'm sure I've been there a few times myself.<br /><br />Nobody likes to lose but sometimes I wonder if the makers of modern games take a perverse pleasure in making even the "easy" levels of their game impossible to complete. (<i>and don't even get me started on the issues of trying to return a game to the store because it's "too hard" for the kids</i>).<br /><br />Poor game performance can ruin the mood for the rest of the day and make it impossible to concentrate. You don't know the outcome of a game level until you play it and even the best games can quickly turn sour. For this reason, gaming before school or before homework is a huge "no no". Just don't allow it.<br /><br />Gaming also impacts sleep and I know that if I'm "helping" the boys with their lego Star Wars/Batman/Harry Potter/indy..etc games, I dream of bricks. Even worse, it begins to spill over into real life. I remember playing Doom and changing jobs at a similar time. I started work in a fabrication plant and there were barrels everywhere. I clearly remember thinking (seriously), If I could blow those barrels up there could be a door or prize behind it. Computer game realism and rendering has come a long way since then and I suspect that "spilling over into reality" is becoming even more of a problem.<br /><br />Games are actually very helpful - up to a point - and then they quickly become detrimental.<br /><br /><b>Social Repression</b><br />My last point concerns social repression - and this is increasingly becoming an issue with adults too. How often do you recall talking to someone who just won't stop fiddling with their phone? How many people use phones, books, pads and media players on public transport instead of talking to their fellow travelers?<br /><br />It's a big issue because people with Asperger's syndrome tend to be more prone to this kind of behaviour and yet, they're the ones who need to social interaction practice the most.<br /><br />At the very least, when you have visitors over, your kids should be talking to them, not hiding away in their rooms playing games or reading books.<br /><br /><b>Next Time</b><br />In my next post, I'll cover drawing the line, some rules and methods for limiting media access and ways to make those non-media interactions with kids more enjoyable.</div>Talisman Summer Camphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15933508332004558208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055367453073243679.post-53512615697381216492012-06-19T12:46:00.000-07:002012-06-19T12:46:01.361-07:00Camp articles all over!Great article in the Washington Post :)<br />

Sleepovers and summer camp teach kids important life skills</h1>

Forget <a data-xslt="_http" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/the-ups-and-downs-of-being-an-empty-nester/2012/06/04/gJQA3Kr9DV_story.html">empty-nest syndrome</a>: I had a rough enough time recently sending my 6-year-old off to his first sleepover at a friend’s house.<br />
He was clearly more ready for this milestone than his father and I were: He’d been begging to go for weeks, and that afternoon, he sat on our steps eagerly waiting to be picked up — sleeping bag, glow-in-the-dark PJs and s’mores fixings in hand — as I worked at holding back tears.<br />
While it can be hard to watch your children head off for sleepovers, sleepaway camp or even Grandma and Grandpa’s house for a few nights, such an event is a healthy and important step, says clinical psychologist Maureen Monaghan of Children’s National Medical Center.<br />
“I think it is a great idea to give kids an experience of being on their own in a structured, supportive, supervised environment,” she says. The time away from parents provides an excellent opportunity for even young children to take initiative, exercise their autonomy and develop leadership, problem-solving and social skills, which often builds self-esteem, she explains. “Even just one night away from parents can be valuable. . . . It definitely challenges kids — it takes them out of their comfort environment — but it’s usually really positive, and we see a lot of growth and maturing.”<br />
To learn more, I spoke with psychologist Michael Thompson, author of <a data-xslt="_http" href="http://www.amazon.com/Homesick-Happy-Time-Parents-Child/dp/0345524926">“</a><a data-xslt="_http" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345524926?ie=UTF8&tag=washingtonpost-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=0345524926">Homesick and Happy: How Time Away From Parents Can Help a Child Grow</a> ,” about letting your kids go away and the associated benefits for the whole family:<br />
<br />
<strong>Why is it so hard for today’s parents to separate from their children, at any age?</strong><br />
This generation of parents has invested an enormous amount of time in being emotionally close with their children and having very deep attachments. They’ve also invested an enormous amount in protecting their children from trauma. We have doubled the amount of time spent with children in the last 20 years. When you’re all in, it’s hard to step out — it’s just that simple.<br />
<br />
<strong>Even though it can be difficult to send kids off to a sleepover or a full summer of camp, why is it valuable?</strong><br />
At some point, all children are going to have to be independent, and a safe place to practice that is camp, although we’re also talking about overnight school trips, boarding school, even a week at a relative’s house. A big, developmentally appropriate step for independence is sleeping away from your parents.<br />
When you face challenges away from your parents, you know the victory belongs to you alone. If you are, in fact, homesick and you overcome it — which the vast majority of children do — it means that YOU beat it. It was painful, and you beat it. If you were uncomfortable on a canoe trip, a trail ride, a long hike, you know that you got through it: You either sucked it up on your own or got comfort from your friends or counselors, but it’s your achievement.<br />
Okay, so you got stung by a bee: It was scary and painful, but you got over it and you recovered, which means that you can deal with all the bees in the world without your mom — the bees being a metaphor, of course, for all of the challenges in life. How do you know what makes you strong if Mom is always fetching your shoe out of the mud or standing there saying, “Oh, it’s not so bad”?<br />
The problem with parents is that it’s very hard for them to recognize that at times they have a regressive effect on the lives of their children, and sometimes in order for kids to reach their full potential, they have to get away from that regressive pull.<br />
<br />
<strong>Can that make a difference later in life as well?</strong><br />
I think camp is the best emotional preparation for a successful college experience, because you practice being on your own, keeping track of your clothes; you practice living in a community and getting along with roommates you don’t love — all of the skills you need for true independence. . . . It’s very helpful to start the process of learning to live independently and also in community earlier.<br />
Perhaps the biggest psychological impact of camp is on resilience, on character and on learning to be a member of a community that’s separate from your family, who always cut you some slack and who have preconceived notions about you.<br />
One of the things that troubles me about this generation is that we want our children endlessly challenged academically, but we don’t seem to want their resilience challenged in other ways. You can’t know you’re resilient until your resilience is challenged. And resilience or grit is key because it’s what gets you through the hard times in life. When you are in college, discouraged and overwhelmed, does your mother get you through? No. But the experience of being out in a thunderstorm on a hiking trip and knowing you survived — that just might.<br />
<br />
<strong>How do you know if your child is ready to be away for at least a week?</strong><br />
If they like sleepovers and are curious about friends going away to camp, or if they’ve asked to go on a weekend with a friend, that’s a very good indication. In general, I’d say that kids are ready between 6 and 12, depending on temperament and style, but especially if your child has shown some resilience. The kids I worry about are those with anxiety disorders and depression — they are at risk — but plenty of these children do great, and I have even seen some camp experiences cure anxiety disorder. I’ve also seen some [of these children] not be able to finish camp.<br />
<br />
<strong>How can nervous parents prepare a child for camp, boarding school or any other extended time away?</strong><br />
Start by sending your child to their grandparents’, to an aunt and uncle’s, or to a friend’s house for a sleepover: someplace with an adult they trust but where they get to be away and have to fall asleep without their usual bedtime ritual. The inner feeling for the child will be “Well, my aunt did things totally differently from my mom, but I fell asleep anyway and it was fine.” They now have a bigger range and know they are more resilient than they thought.<br />
You should obviously address any medical needs like medication, a special diet or potential anxiety, and it’s important to sit down and talk about what to expect, all the issues. You should always acknowledge the possibility of homesickness; tell your child if you experienced it and share your own stories.<br />
Homesickness is universal. Research shows that 97 percent of children report homesickness of one kind or another: Of that group, 81 percent is mild, and the kid gets over it in three to four days; 19 percent of kids who go to camp have some significant distress, and it’s a longer process. About a third of the latter — or six out of 100 children — have unremitting homesickness. But they are the heroes of my book, because more than half of them go back to sleepaway camp the next summer. Recently, a woman in Toronto said to me, “Oh my God, I had a terrible first year at camp.” I said, “What happened?” and she said, “I knew I had to go back.” I asked “Why?” and she said, “I just knew I had to go back and beat it.”<br />
<br />
<strong>Finally, how can parents prepare themselves for a child-free night, summer or semester?</strong><br />
Go away for a weekend yourself and enjoy the time off! Oftentimes, parents are much more anxious than their kids, whether we’re talking about a sleepover or sleepaway camp. Children often look to their parents for cues on how to handle stressful situations, so as a parent, the best thing you can do is be positive, enthusiastic and encouraging. In your head, you might be worried about some things, about how it’s all going to go, but the message you want to convey to your child is that this is going to be an enjoyable, fun experience, and you’re excited for them.<br />

As I am sure many of you know, the CDC released new statistics that shows a huge increase in the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD's) in the US, now 1:88 are diagnosed with an ASD. Such a jump in the prevalence in ASD raises a question: are parents are just becoming more aware of the signs and symptoms, or if the the number of people in the US with ASD's are rising as a whole? <br />
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSRL4QBm3IMNLDjJoqih6b3TPWhDQQZgkhIME-dRri5Hsfp4dXrPiHxUb_iUVD7kqCj-NMnpJJJeI1k9WHxTuJLMF8jT5kc78MELVaBGxy_qg-PQU0oKZdS3O5aLm1RvTY4fZVMJiAUCA-/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSRL4QBm3IMNLDjJoqih6b3TPWhDQQZgkhIME-dRri5Hsfp4dXrPiHxUb_iUVD7kqCj-NMnpJJJeI1k9WHxTuJLMF8jT5kc78MELVaBGxy_qg-PQU0oKZdS3O5aLm1RvTY4fZVMJiAUCA-/s1600/images.jpg" /></a>Regardless, as this number does continue to rise it seems that the definition of "Autism" is changing. This can be due to a number of reasons, from prime time TV shows featuring characters with Asperger's such as the hit show "Parenthood", to more resources in schools such as social skills groups.<br />
Regardless of the cause, the face of autism even as little as a couple years ago has now turned into many faces. The entire spectrum is starting to be identified. I have heard both Asperger's and Autism described before, as someone closed their eyes and reached into a bag of symptoms, or tendencies and pulled out a handful. This, in essence just alludes to the fact that each individual who is diagnosed as "on the spectrum", Autistic, Asperger's, HFA, PDD-NOS can be drastically different from another individual with the same diagnosis and it seems that more and more people are starting to become aware of that. </div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_uYRHabJTzY5t2HhH_7Uy_voaOKJVYbay7bL4F54MRPb50UI88dFpOZ0sBjW3wkIfkY7dR6gp9hrr-B8J6X1-AVrwlitXL_gHkLCUOEXPYYr9TdKG5YHoaWLPe7ad5tXpBZRiJmbDuHkv/s1600/DSM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_uYRHabJTzY5t2HhH_7Uy_voaOKJVYbay7bL4F54MRPb50UI88dFpOZ0sBjW3wkIfkY7dR6gp9hrr-B8J6X1-AVrwlitXL_gHkLCUOEXPYYr9TdKG5YHoaWLPe7ad5tXpBZRiJmbDuHkv/s200/DSM.jpg" width="200" /></a>This expansion of the understanding that Autism is on a <i>spectrum</i> could not come at a better time. The impending change to the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual (DSM) with the new edition scheduled to release next year may have a large effect on the autism spectrum disorders on the whole. The plan to remove the Asperger's diagnosis has varied responses, but it seems that with the homonigization of the diagnosis that students who once may have not qualified for services through their public school may get much needed help. Also that this diagnosis is something that the average person may see weather they realize it or not. Some of the brightest, most innovative minds have been on the spectrum, and have proved to by extremely successful. Even those who are on the spectrum and may not be household names can become successful independent adults functional in society, and it seems that this is a new realization for some. <br />
<br />
As we advocate for Autism Awareness this month, I hope that awareness for the entire spectrum continues to grow. From simple awareness can grow increased acceptance for those on the spectrum, resources for those and their families, in addition to a growing diverse population who so often are the innovative minds of the future. <br />
